Pilates is an exercise technique developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s. Born in Germany, as a child he suffered from Asthma , Rickets and Rheumatic Fever, and his life expectancy was short. Determined to bring his body back to it’s peak, he practised martial arts, Yoga, boxing and weightlifting and from this developed his own method.

The technique he developed helps to create the perfect balance between mind and body by a series of controlled movements, focussing on common muscular imbalances and strengthening from the inside out, enabling the body to achieve maximum efficiently.

Originally practiced by professional dancers, Pilates has evolved over the 21st century, however, the fundamental principles: Breathing, Control, Concentration, Centering, Flow and Precision still remain the same today.

What is Pilates?

  • Improved joint mobility, flexibility, and stability

  • Flatter stomach and improved muscle tone, strength and endurance

  • Improved posture and reduced risk of injury

  • Reduced stress levels

  • More efficient respiratory, circulatory and lymphatic systems

The classes are one hour and will largely take place on a mat with some standing exercises. Exercises will be aimed at a general level with options and adaptations available to suit everyone. Before the class, Lisa will discuss any issues or concerns with you and prescribe exercises accordingly. Classes are low impact, in a relaxed and stress free environment.

Benefits of Pilates

Please wear clothes that are both comfortable and that you are able to move in. Leggings / fitness trousers and t - shirt / vest are ideal. Layers also work well because it’s not a sweaty class! Pilates is done either in bare feet or socks. There are mats provided but some people prefer to use their own. It’s useful to bring a small towel to roll up and use for comfort during some of the exercises and don’t forget a bottle of water!
